
Tim Lieuwen
Regents’ Professor and Interim EVP for Research, Georgia Tech
Dr. Tim Lieuwen is a Regents’ Professor, the David S. Lewis, Jr. Professor, and the interim Executive Vice President for Research at Georgia Tech. In this capacity, he serves as chief research officer for the Institute, providing overall leadership for the research, economic development, and related support units within Georgia Tech. This position provides overall leadership for the $1.45 billion annual research enterprise that includes the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), 10 interdisciplinary research institutes (IRIs), commercialization/startup activities, economic development, and related support units within Georgia Tech.
He is also the founder and CTO of TurbineLogic, an analytics firm working in the energy industry. Prof. Lieuwen is an international authority on clean energy and propulsion, and his work has contributed to numerous commercialized innovations in the energy and aerospace sectors. He has authored 4 books and over 400 other publications.
Board positions include governing/advisory boards for Oak Ridge National Lab, Pacific Northwest National Lab, National Renewable Energy Lab, EPRI Advisory Council, appointment by the DOE Secretary to the National Petroleum Counsel, and board member of the ASME International Gas Turbine Institute. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering and is heavily engaged with the National Research Council and the National Academies, and has supported and led numerous studies on energy, decarbonization, and the environment.
He is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a foreign fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, and a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Society of Mechanical Engineering, American Physical Society, and The Combustion Institute. Major awards include the ASME R. Tom Sawyer Award, AIAA Pendray Award, and ASME’s George Westinghouse Gold Medal.
